Time Management After 40

By Pauline A Delany

Most women see themselves as being less tied down and having more time to do things they enjoy once they reach the age of 40. Few foresee the need for new strategies in time management at a time when they expect to have more freedom to enjoy their lives. By then, the kids are out of the house and most have settled into a cimagesareer that they plan to retire from. Most people and couples have attained some degree of financial security at this point, making work less of a priority. When the day arrives and they reach of age of 40, many women are surprised to find that the reality is a far cry from the idea they have imagined for so long.

Why Your Time May be in Demand after You Turn 40

Each decade brings with it a new set of priorities, limitations and challenges. For some women, the 40s may turn out to be the most demanding times of their lives. Changes in their family dynamic or in their work structure can have a tremendous impact on how their days flow. Every situation is different to some degree. With some careful planning, you may find that you can handle everything life throws at you without sacrificing those things or people who are most important to you.

Caring for yourself should be a number one priority. The things you do in your 40s will have an impact on your health when you are in your 60s and beyond. Determine what types of physical activity you enjoy the most and schedule a time for them. As conditions like diabetes, osteoporosis and cardiovascular disease become a higher risk factor, taking the time to exercise now will help you reduce your risk so that you can have a healthier future.

Limit computer and TV time. Most of us have our favorite TV shows that we want to watch. Thanks to great inventions like DVRs, we can even work them into our schedules without sacrificing other important events. When you are surfing the TV channels and complaining about having nothing to watch, you probably shouldn’t be watching at all. Watching shows that don’t interest you just to pass the time is a waste of time! The same is true of checking emails, surfing the internet or checking your text messages. Instead, focus on projects that you need to do around the house that you never seem to have enough time for!

Write down everything you do for a week. At the end of the week, look at where you are spending large chunks of time that have no benefit to you, your job or to your family.

Look for ways to pass responsibilities on to someone else, both at work and at home. Even if there really isn’t anyone else who is capable of doing that report, there is someone else who can take out the trash.

Start each day with a definitive plan of what you will do and what you expect to accomplish. If you know where you want to end up, it will make it easier to take the steps to get there without getting sidetracked.

Regardless of your best efforts, there are still 24 hours in a day and no one can run without food and sleep. Time management isn’t about having more time. It’s about prioritising, organising, and getting the most important things done on time!

Life Changing Recommendations For Forty-Something Women

By Gill Hart

Turning forty is a milestone in the psychological sense for a lot of women; one that many dread. But rather than being something to worry about, with the right attitude and determination, the phrase “Life begins at forty” can become a reality, not a cliché.

By the time we reach middle-age, many of us have often gone through major life upheavals such as the break up of a marriage, loss of a partner or career, health scares or watching our children leave home. However psychologically, if we are strong enough, our lives can change the moment our attitude does.

The maturity, life experience and knowledge we possess at this stage in our lives can be used to become more self confident and desirable than ever before. Women such as Halle Berry, Sharon Stone, Sarah Fergusson, Emma Thompson and Diane Keaton are testimony to this. Willie Russell’s 1989 movie about a bored British housewife, “Shirley Valentine” should be compulsory viewing at what can be achieved at 42!

Surviving an emotional trauma gives us chance to look back and build from the experience. The opportunity to reinvent ourselves, start a new fitness regime, change our diet, and carry out a complete wardrobe overhaul, keeping only the things that make us feel good. This opportunity for change should mean that we take more risks, make more mistakes and do things that, in the past, we have only dreamt about. A chance to let go of the strings attached to our old lives and to look on every day as a new experience.

Live for the Moment

In our forties we realize that life is made up of a series of moments. Those moments should be treasured and recognized for what they are; important elements of our past which have provided us with the memories, love and the determination to make us what we are today.

It’s not about the car we drive, the size of our house, how much we earn or our status in society. In our forties and fifties we begin to realize that life is about people and places, knowledge and experiences – it is up to us to decide how to use them. There is so much of the world to see, so many people to meet and so many things to do.

Despite what you have gone through in the past, live for the moment. Do not bring the past into the future, as it eats away at your existence and stops you from moving on. Banish every negative thought with a positive one, wake up every day with some small memory of a happy time in your life.

Do not think about what you want, but rather what you have. Take a look around you and savor the good things. A sunrise, a sunset, an act of kindness, a chance encounter – they all go towards making the person that you are.

As we get older it is very difficult to let go of the baggage that binds us, many of us don’t just have suitcases, we have trunks! Yet, without letting go of our bad memories and negative experiences we cannot truly appreciate living in the now.

Life Changes for the Forty-Something Woman

Making such changes in our forties gives us a better armor to cope with life’s challenges than a twenty something – we may have more resources, we certainly have more experience, and have developed a maturity that will enable us to handle situations more competently and wisely.

Our forties are a great time to concentrate on our own self development. Start each day with a positive thought, however small. It is often the most insignificant that is the most meaningful – a loving gesture or a kind word. Such thoughts get us through the day and help recover from traumatic times in our past.

No Regrets at Fifty-Something

Don’t look back on your life by reflecting on all the things you could have done. Take a message from Jorge Luis Borges in his poem entitled Instants “If could live my life over again…..I wouldn’t try to be so perfect. I’ll take more risks, I’ll take more trips, I’ll watch more sunsets….”

Human nature is such that the things we regret most in our lives are the things that we didn’t do, rather than those we did. If it all goes wrong, then pick up the pieces and move on. In the beginning it is very hard; easy to say, but not so easy to do. However, in our forties and fifties we get better at it!

In a few years time you can look back and truly say, “Life Begins at Forty“.

Women Setting Goals After 40

By Pauline A Delany

Too often women just like you, put goals off to raise a family, to work full time to help support their family and to be a wife and a mother. But just like them, once you turn 40, you find that you’ve reach a point in your life that you have more free time, your kids are older, maybe moved out of the house and went off to school, work has finally settled down, money is now secure, and your mind starts to wonder back to all the goals you have always wanted to accomplish throughout the years, but were never able to do. Maybe it’s time now that you’re in your 40’s, to start checking off some of your goals and doing a little something for you for a change. But how can you get started?

images

Structure

Ensure that you have a full understanding of what is required and what steps you’ll need to take to complete your goal. Review your goal and create a detailed list in point form of everything that you’ll need to do. From that list ensure you have a really good picture in your “minds eye” of the task at hand and create a realistic time frame for every point on your list. Look at your list and break down each project on it into natural segments, and prioritize those segments with a time frame that is also realistic. A goal is easier to complete when it’s viewed as multiple small projects rather than one huge, daunting one.

Natural Habits

Make your list according to the way you like to work. If you prefer to do a lot of small things first, then start your list with all the small steps and work your way up to the bigger ones. However, if you know that you will feel more motivated and accomplished jumping over the first difficult hurdle right out of the gate, then put that on your list first. You need to recognize and allow your list to reflect they type of person that you are, and do what is right for you.

Don’t Go It Alone

Whether your task is big or small, you don’t have to do it alone. Go to your mate, kids, family or friends and get them to help you even if it’s only as a support team. Sometimes a second pair of eyes, or a second option can help when you are stuck on a section of your goal structure. This is your goal, but you don’t need to be afraid to ask for help.

Never Give Up

Nothing in life that is worth having comes easy, and neither will your new goals. It may sound obvious, but you will never accomplish your new goals if you don’t work hard, and stick with them. You may struggle a bit, and trip over some parts of it, but you need to pick yourself back up and keep going because you are a strong powerful woman; who can do it.

The Forty-Something Woman Entrepreneur

By Blanca Garcia

on-the-phone-closing-the-deal-432224-s

Many women decide to take the plunge and start their own business when they are in their forties. After having worked many years for someone else and having accumulated valuable experience and skills, this is the time when the forty-something woman usually decides to put all that knowledge to work for her and no one else.

Statistics in many developed countries show that the number of new businesses being started by women is soaring. The authors of “Birthing the Elephant: A Woman’s Go-for-it!”, a book offering advice for women who are starting a business, even claim that women are better suited to entrepreneurship than men, because women are not afraid to ask for help.

Female entrepreneurs usually decide to take the crucial step to start their own business because they are not satisfied with their careers and want to do something more challenging or simply because this gives them the flexibility they want.

Balancing a family life and a successful career is one of the biggest challenges women in their forties face these days, and being self-employed or in charge of their own business helps them find the right balance in their lives.

A large percentage of businesses started by women in their forties are home-based, with many forty-something women leading thriving eBay and online businesses.

Sophie Lascelles, 42, runs www.CoolMaternityGifts.com a successful online shop selling maternity gifts for the whole family. Sophie’s love for creating fun slogans and simple graphics, and the realisation when she was pregnant that there is an evident need for shops that can deliver a full range of gifts for the entire family to celebrate the arrival of a new baby, gave her the inspiration she needed to launch her home-based venture.

“I was pregnant with my second baby and was very hesitant about going back to my full-time job when the maternity leave period was over. I wanted to be in control of my career and at the same time spend more time with my kids. Fortunately, I found a way to put my creativity to work in a profitable way without having to make a hefty investment.”

Other areas where entrepreneur women in their forties are succeeding are retail, fashion, leisure, media and marketing. By generating business opportunities, today’s forty-something women entrepreneurs are taking a leading role as contributors to the healing process of the global economy.

The key to doing well as a woman entrepreneur is having the right attitude. Women thinking about launching their own venture should be prepared to do a lot of planning ahead and make sure they are open to advice while remaining focused on their goal.

While support from loved ones always helps; having self-confidence is even more important.
